A BRIEF HAWAIIAN HISTORY LESSON

Prior to 750 AD: Polynesian explorers migrated to the Hawaiian Islands from Tahiti, Fiji, Samoa and the Marquises by outrigger canoes, navigating by the night stars.

750 - 1778:
Prior to western contact the Hawaiians developed a vibrant sophisted culture and a stable land tenure system that supported an estimated population of 300,000 to 1,000.000. Native Hawaiian land tenure was built upon a system in which land is held in common for the benefit of all and upon the concept of "renewable resources." They developed a system whereby they could feed over 1,000,000 people without depleteing or destroying resources for future generations. Extroadinary advances -  many unmatched today - were made in agriculture, aquaculture, engineering, poetry, dance, arts and crafts.

1778:
British exployer Captain James Cook "discovers" the Hawaiian Islands, thus ending Hawaii's isolation.

1826:
The United States extends full diplomatic recognition to the Kingdom of Hawaii and enters into Treaties and Conventions to govern friendship, commerce and navigation.  Subsequent treaties were enacted in 1842, 1849, 1875 and 1887.

1843:
Great Briton and France officially recognize Hawaii's independence.

1874 - 1891:
King David Kalakaua restored many of the nearly extinct cultural traditions and language that had been forbidden by the missionaries for over 70 years.

January 16, 1893:
Marines from the USS Boston march through Honolulu to the grounds of the Iolani Palace, the residence of Queen Lili'uokalani and the seat of the Kingdom of Hawaii government.

January 17, 1893:
@ 5pm under duress Queen Lili'uokalani surrenders the Kingdom of Hawaii to the United States. Fearing for the bloodshed of her people and the futility of resisting the American military, surrendering her Kingdom under protest was her only option. She is then expelled from Iolani Palace which becomes the new headquarters of the U.S. backed "Provisional Government"

1895:
Queen Lili'uokalani signs a document formally abdicating her throne for fear her supporters would be condemned to death, martial law is declared and Hawaiians are forced to swear opposition to the Monarchy forfiet their voting rights and swear allegiance to the United States' newest republic.

1897: The Queen, after one year of imprisonment, travels to Washington, D.C. to plead the Hawaiian Case. 95 percent of Native Hawaiian adults sign petitions protesting annexation, but a Congressional Fact Finding Mission "failed to find a Native Hawaiian who was not opposed to Annexation".

1898:
Due to political manuvering in Washington D.C. Hawaii is annexed to the United States by a simple majority vote rather than the normal 2/3rds majority.

1900:
Hawaii becomes a United States Territory.

1919: The Native Hawaiian population declines from an estimated 1,000,000 in 1778 to an alarming 22,600.

1945: Hawaii is placed under Article 73 of the United Nations Charter as a non-self-governing territory, under the administering authority of the United States.

August 21, 1959:
Hawaii becomes the 50th state.

November 23, 1993:
The U.S. Congress passes and President Clinton signs into law Public Law 103-150, "The Apology Bill", apologizing for the United States' role in the illegal overthrow and the deprivation of the rights of Native Hawaiians to self-determination.

January 17, 2004: Kau Inoa (sign up - to build a Nation) begins. This group hopes to eventually register at least 100,000 Native Hawaiians who are willing to participate in the shaping of a new Hawaiian governing entity.
